River of Dreams

On this date thirty years ago, I began documenting my life and have continued through to present day. For the first three weeks, I recorded the dreams I was having. I would do this as soon as I got up in the morning. Here is the first entry from that first journal.

Date: Morning of Friday, January 26, 1979.
Dream or dreams I remember:
1. We (me, Andy, Wilfred, Renee, and strangely Jennifer Carter, and the whole school) were at Center Street, in its new, bigger, expanded gym. Plenty of things happened which I don't remember, but later they showed the new Superman movie. While they were doing this, they made everyone leave.
2. When I got outside, I found I didn't have any shoes on. I went inside the school to my locker and put my P.E. shoes on. Then, for some strange reason, everyone was at
school, and we were going to Mrs. Talbert's English class. We got there, did some work, and that's all I remember.
3. We had a rummage sale (my family and I) and Jennifer Carter showed up. That's all I remember.
4. I remember that I dreamt that I told Wilfred about my first dream. This is very unusual.

Okay, so it was not particularly well written. It was in ink, writing my first impressions quickly as soon as I awoke, after all. It serves to remember that then, as now (including with this personal blog), it's all just for my own memory's sake and to have something for my son to remember me by, and not necessarily for public consumption.

Thumbing through this first journal which covered 1979 and 1980, it quickly became evident that my dream life was not particularly interesting. Off hand I don't remember when it was that I used to have flying dreams, but apparantly it wasn't during this time period. No, real life was more exciting and worth remembering then, especially as I was transitioning from eighth grade and into high school. Geekdom, lawn mowing, discovering albums and R movies, field trips, Homecomings, many new lifelong friends... it's all here and recorded for posterity....

If I see anything particularly noteworthy, I'll post again with details as their anniversarys arise.

Last night, I dreamed I was a new employee at a trendy Louisville restaurant. Water kept leaking or appearing on the floor in various spots from some unknown source, and I had to help mop it up. One employee told me to grab a piece of map artwork from the wall to help soak it up, but I couldn't tell if she were trying to trick me into getting in big trouble with the owner.

Last night I dreamed I was on the shooting location of the Curb Your Enthusiasm/Seinfeld reunion (this is a real thing). George, sporting fake grey hair, now lived in Jerry's old apartment and kept yelling "This is my domain! Rules must be followed!" to Kramer with Elaine sitting nearby, bored. George and Kramer were both wearing the orange prison jumpsuits they wore in the last scene of the final 1998 episode. In the reality of Curb Your Enthusiasm, they were filming this new episode of Seinfeld to add to the syndication run of old episodes. Meanwhile, in real life, Chris Isaak was flying himself nearby and had an accident involving birds. Wilfred was in a dream dovetaiing into this one, with him sneaking off to a nightclub called Coyote's (which was just like the Louisville one) somewhere in rural Illinois but trying to lose me before he got there.

Last night I dreamed I was with old friends Wilfred, Sam, Shannon, Mark and Greg, all as we are now, sort of hiking in a rocky area to get to some gathering. As we got closer, I saw a few teenage girls and one of them looked exactly like Lori Smith (old girlfriend). I started to tell Wil, "Hey, she looks...." and he said "Stop! I know what you're going to say," so we moved on. At the gathering, I saw Dena (Lori's sister), then separately (since they are/were estranged in dream world) I saw Lori as she looks now (in dream world), with hair highlighted blonde since she's now in her 40s. She had an empty chair next to her, which reminded me that I'd heard she's divorced now (in dream world). At the gathering on the big screen, they showed a preview scene from a Season 3 episode of Mad Men, which was kind of a musical fantasy dream scene and really awful. I was embarrassed at how bad it was since that is my favorite show now.
