Take Shelter Like Crazy

On a lonely Monday night in Louisville, two movies featuring up and coming actors from Kentucky were viewed. Take Shelter stars Michael Shannon, a bug-eyed actor from Lexington who specializes in intense roles, most notably in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire and a handful of independent films beforehand... he is currently filming Superman: The Man of Steel in the role of villianous General Zod. In tonight's movie, he was a construction worker who has nightmares about an upcoming storm which prompt him to build an underground shelter in his back yard at massive cost to his family and friends. Louisville's own Jennifer Lawrence (from A Winter's Bone, X-Men: First Class, and the upcoming Hunger Games) costars in Like Crazy, a romantic drama about a college student who ignores her visa and stays in L.A. longer than she should, jeopardizing all future happiness with a classmate she met near the end of her time in school. Both films feature good acting and a handful of compelling scenes, but in neither case do they add up to much, with both ending in non-endings, leaving the audience to try to piece together what happened.
