Heath Ledger picked a bad time to pass away. Though he had already appeared in several good movies including The Patriot, A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, and Brokeback Mountain, he was only 28 and on the verge of starring in his first blockbuster, this summer's new Batman movie, The Dark Knight (see poster thumbnail down the left side of this page).

Principal photography wrapped up months ago with trailers already appearing in theaters. The entire advertising campaign so far has been centered around the return of the Joker, as portrayed by Heath Ledger. It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few months with the marketing for this movie. Maybe they will shift focus to some of the other (less appealing) villians that will appear, such as Two-Face.

In any event, a sad thing to happen, and it is surely going to put a big stink on this movie.

Side note: Let it hearby be known that Heath Ledger sans Joker makeup has always reminded me of my long-lost high school friend Frederick Marshall Brown.

Just wanted to note that young Brad Renfro also died, a week earlier. He was a supporting actor in Ghost World (one of my favorite movies from this century) and starred in other movies I liked, such as Bully. He got his start a decade ago in The Client, which I never saw. That's all.

In this age of TiVo, I hardly ever see commercials anymore, but the other day I did see part of one, or maybe it was part of a newscast story on upcoming summer movies featuring clips from The Dark Knight. All it showed was Batman; Joker was nowhere to be seen. But this is good. Those increasingly bad Batman movies of the 1990s lost their way as they shifted focus away from Batman to highlight the crazy villians, so hopefully they'll keep focus on him this time around.
