Music update... I've been paying more attention over the past few weeks and have discovered several new bands I like, including the Decemberists (the artwork on their Crane Wife CD interested me long before I finally started hearing their songs), OK Go (this may be more of a passing novelty act), Peter Bjorn and John (as seen on Late Night with Conan O'Brien; theirs is the video linked above), Regina Spektor (a great young Russian singer-songwriter recently spotlighted on CBS Sunday Morning), and the hard rockin' 70s throwback from Australia, Wolfmother (also first encountered on Late Night with Conan O'Brien).
Add to this list the British band Kaiser Chiefs whom I discovered last summer, a tentative perch for the Black Eyed Peas (but not that stupid Humps song), most probably John Mayer, and definitely my favorite 21st Century musical superhero: Jack White. The White Stripes "Hardest Button to Button" music video continues to feature prominently on my MySpace page.
But wait... it figures, now that I found cool new stuff to listen to, my tired old faves from last century are starting to show signs of life again. To wit:
The Beatles Their new mash-up CD Love is a hit and soon their classic albums will finally be remastered and re-released on CDs and online
John Mellencamp The Hoosier rocker's new Freedom's Road CD recently became his highest charting album ever
Sting Forget about that new album of 400-year-old songs played on the lute.... the dude has finally reunited with the Police!
And last, but not least.... Billy Joel just released a new single of the first song he has written and recorded since 1993.

So...what do you think of the new Billy Joel song? The jury's still out with me.
I LOVE what I've heard/seen of OK Go--that video I have posted on my MySpace page is one of the most amazing things I've ever watched...sometimes I just sit and play it over and over (I really do--I'm not exaggerating) and marvel at the amazing choreography.
I'm liking the Decemberists, too...I think it's good that I'm finally starting to branch out (a LITTLE!) and listen to some different music. I seem to get caught in ruts where I just listen to the same songs/artists for days/weeks on end. Maybe I need some fresh "stuff" to inspire me, eh?
I don't like the new Billy Joel song. It brings to mind the old criticism that all he does is to emulate other artists rather than coming up with his own style. Now he's doing Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett. Why bother setting yourself up for that comparison? Does anybody want to hear this kind of music from Billy Joel?
